In February of 2009, we decided to drive the short distance to the hill top village of Rennes-le-Chateau. This little village which overlooks the Pyrenees is steeped in history and myth and is buzzing with tourists and searchers in the height of the Summer season. Yet it remains so still on a bright Winters day when the uninterrupted views are simply breath taking.

On this day we wandered around to the Mairie and there, advertised in the window, was a little shop for rent. The advertisement had only gone up and we were delighted to have been fortunate enough to be accepted by the local council to rent this space at the top of the village in the car park called Belvedere.

We opened our doors and it has been an amazing experience. Like offering an oasis to people to step into. Those who pass our way seem drawn inside. Some return, while others continue their journey.

It has become known locally as the Angel Place and we welcome people during the season from 11 until 6 pm.
April - September.

Rennes-le-Chateau
Rennes-le-Chateau is an old medieval village built on the remains of a Visigoth stronghold called Rhedae. It once was the Capital of the Razes, one of the most powerful provinces of southern France. It has played an important part in the history of the area, and was the home of the lords of Rennes, who had a connection with the legendary Knights Templar Order. The environment is known for its many power places such as lay lines and vortexes and Rennes-le-Chateau may well be part of a huge Celtic Temple.

Around 1900 there lived a clever priest in the village, who became mysteriously rich when renovating the church and grounds. He created a paradise on top of the hill including a villa (the Villa Bethania) where, according to himself, retired priests could spend their days. Apart from renovating the village church and leaving hints of what he found, he also built himself a library (the Tour Magdala, photo on the left). He even had peacocks, a monkey and exotic plants for which he built an orangerie. There were beautiful gardens, fountains, and he received many rich guests who payed him a visit. He must have spent millions! But what did he find? What made him so rich?

Today you can still explore the grounds of the enigmatic Abbé Saunière, and see the clues he left behind in the village church, which is dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Maybe you will find out what he found, as the puzzle which the priest left behind has not been solved yet!

Tours through the area including Rennes-le-Chateau are organised by Barinca Travel & Tourism.
